Cowboy up for the Black Spur Ultra

Welcome back to another race report from ActiveSteve! This time, we find ourselves heading to the beautiful Kimberley Alpine Resort for the 108km solo Black Spur Ultra. After having taken on both the Sinister 7 100 miler race and Canadian Death Race, it was time to check out the 3rd Ultra that is put on by Sinister Sports. It is no secret that I LOVE to visit and race in real mountains, so getting out to the Canadian Rockies is always a highlight of my race season. My past experiences in races put on by Brian have always been impeccable, […]

Home is Where the Race Is

As a result of my late November ankle surgery, part of my plan for the 2019 race season was to play it safe. For me, that meant trying not to bite off more than I could chew, and look at racing a few events closer to home and perhaps not super long distance. In my searching I realized that MEC had a local trail race series that was very cheap, and had 3 events all within a couple hours of home. They are no frills for sure (no swag, meals, etc.), but at a starting price of $20, they fit […]

Two Wrongs Make a Right?

When you last checked in on me, I had just successfully taken part in the inaugural Mad Trapper Backyard Ultra. Although that event is all about running until you can run no longer, my only goal was to run steady and healthy for 50km or so. I ended up doing 60+k, but pulled the plug in order to go into the follow weekends’ race strong. After all, I was set to tackle a tough 80k race, and wanted a strong finish to signal my return to form. Unfortunately, on a Tuesday night group training run, all that went to pot […]

A Race with No End…

Building off the relative success I had a few weeks earlier at the Raid Pulse 8 hour adventure race, I decided that it might be time to put the ankle to a real test and sign up for a real trail running race. To those ends, I’d already committed to racing the 80km Quebec Mega Trail race on the July 1st long weekend. However, that wasn’t quite good enough for my liking. My training volume had been quite low to date, and I didn’t want to go straight into a 50 miler without a bit of a test. And I […]

Playing the Long Game at my Season Closing Race

Holy cow is this post late!! Here I sit in the cold winds of January typing out a race report for a race that I took part in almost 3 months ago! You may be asking yourself why I’m so tardy with this season-closing post, especially given my pretty good result? Well, less than 1 week after the race, I was leaving for a 3 week expedition / vacation in Patagonia, and upon my return, I discovered I was going in for ankle surgery less than 1 week later. Since that time, my focus was on recovery and a host […]
