Turning on the Jets

Howdy to all and happy holidays! For the first time in a while I finally have a story that I’m happy to share with everyone. Yes, as you can see by the picture, and maybe guess from the title of the post, I’ve finally gotten back onto the racing scene by propelling myself with only my legs 🙂 Yup, for the first time since September of 2007, I’ve RAN in a race. Not only did I run though, I ran hard. I ran to the point that I could barely breathe anymore. That’s how hard I ran. And it felt great! Mind you, I wouldn’t say that I’m at 100% yet, but it was nice to really open up the tap and see what I could do. Of course, this wasn’t just any running race. No siree, this was the first Mad Trapper snowshoe race of the 2008-2009 season, of which there are 4 races, all of which I’m pre-registered for. Feel free to head over to flickr and check out the pictures that I took from the event. None from the race course sadly, but I was a little pre-occupied. In case you have ADD and don’t feel like reading my entire post, I came in a very respectable 5th place overall with a time of 1hr12mins. for the 10km course. As a comparison, the last time I ran this same course (in the snow), I had a time of 1hr32mins, and was in 14th! Yup, shaved off 20 minutes!! For the full story, please read on.

Training Going Well…

Sorry folks, I just couldn’t help myself with this one! I stumbled across this crazy website, and saw the cover, and just had to do it. Amazing what a little working out and some hair replacement therapy can do for my body, isn’t it? 😉 I really have nothing new to add from my most recent post, just wanted y’all to share a laugh. Not that my crazy eyes in the upper right corner aren’t enough to freak you all out already. What do you think? Has ActiveSteve crossed a line here? Am I too far off the beaten path? Well too bad, ‘cuz if it makes me laugh, it’ll make you laugh, and that’s what we all need right now.

At any rate, I’m just over a week away from my first real ‘running’ race in well over a year.

Into the Wild

Hey Gang! I figure it’s high time that I write a little blog post to let you know what’s new in Steve-land. Not too much actually, as you can probably tell by my rather sporadic posts of late. However, I’ve been keeping busy and having a good time whenever possible. To wit: the 2008 Fall Classic poker tourney out at Calabogie at Jim’s cabin. I lobbied to get a few more of the gang out there, but space is pretty tight, so the core group were all that could make it out. However, there may be space for the winter classic when that rolls around! As is becoming tradition, every year around hunting season, Jim has us out for a great guys weekend, where we are treated to deer meat (sausages this time), and some great poker action. Read on for a bit more about the weekend, and other stuff I’ve been up to. To check out some pics, head over to flickr.

The Rumours of my Ignorance have been Greatly Exaggerated

Brace yourselves friends, for I am about to do something that I virtually never do. Those who know me will understand that talking about work is something that I rarely do, and usually only when prompted. The inevitable questions around ‘what do you do’ sort of bore me, because to me work stays at work, and when I leave the building, I don’t take it with me. However, in an unprecedented case of giving a crap, I’ve decided to venture out and post a little something about my current work stuff. Don’t worry, this site will not devolve into a diatribe about my daily grind. Trust me, both you and I are probably much more interested in my other life ;-). However, I’ve gotta get this off my chest, so please read on for a rare insight into WorkerSteve.

Change is Good!

Howdy everyone, and welcome to ActiveSteve 3.0! Yup, it was time to throw the switch on the things I’ve been working on in the background for a while with respect to this website. In celebration of the fact that ActiveSteve has essentially been reborn as a result of getting the clean bill of health, I decided to get my portal re-vectored in anticipation of my future adventures 🙂 Although I’ve always been pretty happy with the site that I had, it was time to try some new things. Well, that and the fact that my server host has been sort of trying to get me to upgrade my underlying content management system (CMS), Drupal specifically. Of course I’m sure you’re not all that interested in the boring techy side of this. You’re probably just interested in finding out what exactly I’ve changed, what’s new, and what you can do here at the new ActiveSteve. I’ll keep is relatively short, but if you’d like to actually read about what’s new, rather than just messing around yourself, click the link to read more.
