The Nanaimo Bar management is pleased to announce that the newly-renovated facilities are ready for use! That’s right, work has been completed on the new oak bar fixtures in the renovated basement of the Cheshire Studios and home complex. After 5ish months of spotty labour (you get what you pay for), the beautiful 8 foot bar is done. Not only is it done, but it’s now fairly well stocked. I finished off work last week, but hadn’t gotten around to posting anything on the completed project. The picture at the right shows the back of the bar, with the cabinet doors on, and the fridge it place. The cabinets to the left of the fridge are loaded up with all sorts of libations for future consumption. If you’d like to see a few more pictures of the bar, click over to flickr.
I will state for the record that the complete project hasn’t been finished yet. There is still some work to be done on decorating the surrounding area. I’ve gotta put up some pictures and prints and stuff, as well as source some stools, of which I think I’ve decided to just go with some folding oak bar stools from those crazy Swedes of Ikea-land. The other main thing I want to make is a wine glass rack. Glasses take a lot of space, and after counting out 48 stemmed glasses at our house, I decided I should build an overhead rack to suspend them. My design is not-so-loosely based on this thing I found online. If my math is right, I’m not really saving any money building it myself, but it’ll be solid oak, and nicely finished by me. Plus, I can say everything was hand-built by me.
As far as opening night goes, well, my calendar is showing that we’re already into May next week, and the marathon is coming up fast. Point being, it’s doubtful old crazy drunken Steve will be around till next month. Luckily the end of May also coincides with my 31st birthday (on the 31st of May, which apparently makes this my ‘lucky’ birthday year). So I would expect that we’ll host a gathering probably on June 3rd to celebrate my life, my bar, and the return to warm weather! Keep your eye on your inboxes, and block that day off if you can :-). Till then, stay cool!
