A Little Winter Adventuring

Hey gang, sorry for the delay in posting any new stories to you all. I’ve been pretty wrapped up with the kitchen renovations and work, but fear not, the job is [finally] done, so I can get back to the business of entertaining you all with my fun stories. This will be another tale of a winter race that I took part in a few weeks back. In fact, it was my only Winter Adventure Race of the season, so I was pretty psyched about it. Admittedly, finding motivation to stay on top of my training has become rather tricky, so at a bare minimum, I figured that signing up for the whole snowshoe race series, as well as a winter adventure race would at least keep me in some sort of winter shape, rather than hibernating. To peruse the pictures that were snapped at this race, head over to the appropriate flickr folder, then come on back and read the story. I didn’t have my camera with me, as it was in the shop, but at least there were a couple cameras on course to capture some of the fun. I had my GPS on (with permission), but it somehow got stopped part way through the first section, so the map isn’t very interesting. However, read on for a brief synopsis of my fun race.

Greetings loyal readers! It’s been a pretty busy year once again for me in the race world. I’ve participated in and covered a whole range of events from simple running events to obstacle runs, mountain bike races and triathlons. I do all of these because I love participating in them, regardless of the outcome. I enjoy the challenge of new events, and just getting to spend time outdoors with like-minded people. However, not a single one of these events could ever have gotten off the ground without the help of volunteers. To those ends, even though I’m very busy, I do try to pay it forward now and again. This past weekend, I did just such a thing at the 4-hour Raid Pulse sprint race. The key with volunteering at these events is to view them as fun, not work, and to see the great time participants are having as they tackle what could be their greatest challenge of the year. Don’t they deserve a well-run race and to cross the finish with a big smile? I think they do, so read on about the fun I had at this top-notch event!

Winterlude Triathlon: Starting 2nd ‘Tri’ at Rudy Award

Good day friends! Well, I’m starting to feel better about this whole blog post thing now. I’ve almost caught up to my race reports with this posting. As the title implies, I’m going to be talking about the 2011 Winterlude Triathlon in this post. This event is the first official qualifying event I have to do this year in order to get a Rudy Award! Many of you have probably heard me talk about it in the past, as it is something I’ve always planned on doing. So what is it? Well, basically you have to complete 5 events in a calendar year: the Winterlude Tri, the Gatineau Loppet (53k ski race), Rideau Lakes Cycle Tour (360+km in a weekend), a full 42.2km marathon, and an Iron-distance triathlon. For me, it’s never been about the events themselves, but more about the timing of some of the events. After all, I’ve done all those events before, and do long adventure races and multisport events as well. So I know that I have it in me. Alright, I’d like to file a formal complaint with Mother Nature. What’s up with this frickin’ freezing rain when I’m trying to run? All week, Jody has been lamenting that I’d be spoiled at the end of the week by a nice warm run before diving back into cold weather. All I can say is … I’ve been had! Yes, the temperature has gone up, and is at this exact moment sitting at a mere -2 degrees. However, why don’t we just throw in a little rain into the air. What’s that? Oh yeah, it’ll obviously freeze in this temperature, a seldom-enjoyed meteorological occurrence known as freezing rain. The result has got to be one of the most miserable runs in my training this year thus far.
