Success in the Hills of Mansfield

Welcome to another exciting chapter in the ongoing stories of Team Hyper-Active! How do you describe an event where you drive twice as long to get to it as you do participating in the actual race? Well, after leaving Friday afternoon, returning Sunday night, recuperating for almost a day, and now sitting here to write out my thoughts, I’d say it was awesome! I’m speaking of this past weekends’ convoy to the Mansfield Outdoor Centre for this year’s edition of the Salomon Adventure Challenge Winter Adventure Race. For this race, Team Hyper-Active consisted of me (naturally), James Galipeau and Sophia Tsouros. We were also joined for the trip by the threesome of Carl Buchmann, Steeve Lavoie and Anne-Marie Moisan, racing as Team NexxGen AR. Just to keep it extra fun, we also dragged along three other Ottawans (Pete, Melanie and Jill) to join in the fun. This was destined to be a grand adventure, and we figured the best way to kick it off would be to travel all together from Ottawa to Mansfield, a 5-6 hour trip depending on conditions. The following is our tale.

Rookie Mistake in Rainy Raid Pulse Race

Howdy race fans! Hope you all had an excellent long weekend. It was certainly a roller coaster of weather out there, but there was enough good and mediocre to go around I think. Although this post will mainly be about my race experience over the weekend, there were certainly a few other things that were pretty fun for me. I helped Haggaret work on his deck for a while. Went out for a nice supper at Milestone’s with Jody, rented The Wrestler, did a whole pile of outdoor work getting the deck ready for the summer, and even managed to head out to see Star Trek on the big screen. Yippee! Originally I had planned to also do a whole pile of training, but in the end, after the race, I opted to just stick around home and spend some quality time with the family 🙂 While I could go on about all that stuff, I’ll just stick to the race story. As with many of my race stories, you can first check out some pictures from the event, as well as check out the results if you can’t wait. As a special bonus for this one, I also managed to get pretty much the whole thing mapped out, so you can see where we were, and what we were up against. When you’re done checking all that stuff out, come on back and read the rest of my story.

The Christmas Day 10k and other Tales

Seasons Greetings bloggerinos! As aluded to in my previous post, I will now write out a slightly longer account of my past few days off. All said, it was a great few days, although I missed my better half over my time off, and didn’t play nearly enough video games (none) or watch nearly enough movies (2, both yesterday!). However, I got a fair bit of house chores done, messed around with a few computers, exercised a good little bit, and even worked! Even though I was home alone for the actual holidays, I managed to snag two great Christmas meals. On Christmas eve, my sister invited me to her place to celebrate with her, Patrick and Helena. It was my niece’s first Christmas, so how could I turn that down? Then on Christmas day, I was invited to join the crazy Clyman’s clan for Turkey dinner. Since I had missed Oktoberfest (and the associated Turkey ) this year in K-W, I jumped at the chance to feast on a plump bird and the trimmings fixed up by Roger and Sharon! Thanks to all my ‘hosts’ over the holidays, making sure I can’t lose any weight 😉

Doubling Down at the Gatineau Loppet

Would somebody PLEASE turn up the heat on this year’s winter? Please?? I’m starting to really get tired of taking an hour or more to thaw out from training and racing activities. In fact, I’ve gotten more mild frostbite and windburn this year than I ever have, this in spite of the fact that winter actually came a little late this year! But I digress, you don’t want to hear me moan about our frosty temperatures, do you? Nope, you’re all here to read yet another race story, aren’t you? Well, in fact, you’re in for a double story this […]

Adventures of Fire and Frost – Dreki

Here we sit, ready for the fourth and final instalment of my series of posts from Iceland in 2016. Writing these up has [sadly] taken me 3.5 years, but I hope you’ve been enjoying them. This post covers the most terrain of the four, as this quarter of the country is pretty extensive. As you may expect with the Dreki, or Dragon, we’ll be heading to some areas pretty well known for its volcanoes. That includes the one called Katla, which is a huge volcano that had been threatening to erupt during our entire trip! In fact, we were not […]
